Ramesh Dembla, The Change of Bangalore Fashion

Ramesh Dembla, the Bangalore based fashion designer is well known for his extremely innovative concepts in designs. This proven fashionista has always stunned the city with his outstanding talent in garment making. He believes that apart from liking the garment on ramp, a woman should like it off ramp too.

Could u please tell our readers about your family?

Mine was a love marriage. I fell in love with an airhostess while travelling to Bombay. We got married but unfortunately had to divorce after 9 years. I Have 2 lovely sons, Krishna and Rayan of 12 and 9 years.

Before getting into full time designing what were you doing?

I had a car accessory show room called ‘Car and Style’.

Could you please elaborate on the story of you getting into designing?

I wanted a break, since been designing for close friends and family. I thought that it will be nice to make a collection and have an exhibition for 3 days. On the first day itself all my garments were sold out. My luck came in the form of ‘Lifestyle’ store. They heard about this and came there. I got an offer for retailing at Bangalore and Hyderabad. From there I never had to look back.

Can you please tell our readers about your Label and designs?

My label is called ‘KRISHNA DEMBLA (KD)’, named after my son. I make sure that I work out innovative designs. I use a lot of stones as my trade mark. While designing I keep in mind that any woman who likes the garment should be able to wear it than just admiring it on the ramp.

What inspires you and your designs?

Anything beautiful in nature inspires me. The most important part is interpreting it in the design and the final product being the same what I had conceived.

As you are from business background did you face any hiccups from your family members?

Although I was into designing, I made sure that I gave some time to my family business too. As I am a successful designer they are happy about it.

Without holding a degree in designing you have travelled this far. Have you ever regretted for not being a degree holder in designing?

No, I have never regretted because I believe that this is more an inborn talent, than something to be learnt in a class room.

How long does it take for you to make a collection, from your first idea to the show?

The time I take for different collection varies. I usually take an approximate of one month for a collection.

You are known for surprising Bangalore with stunning show stoppers from cine field. What makes you opt for a movie star over a model as the show stopper?

Usually I opt for stars with whom I have worked or whom I visualize to be perfect in displaying my garment. Most of them are my friends.

Could you please tell us about the designs that would be showcased for this season’s Bangalore Fashion Week?

I would reveal that shortly.

How do you evaluate Bangalore’s growth as a fashion hub?

We have a long way to go but the best part is that we are heading there faster. As we know that all the brands are arriving here and widening our options.

What is your piece of advice to upcoming designers?

Be hardworking and confident, because these are the only two things which will take you to places.

Rapid Fire:

What is that one thing you would change with regard to Bangalore fashion – We are bit behind than other cities like Mumbai and Delhi. I would work towards making Bangalore like those cities.

What turns you off – People trying to be fashionable and fitting into smaller size garments irrespective of their weight or body structure.

Who is your role model – Anyone who has sense of dressing

One show that you would crave to do – a KD fashion tour

Your dream show stopper –Julia Roberts

Your style statement – Boots and Scarfs
