Priayanka Maria Rego, The Brilliance Of Photography

Have you ever thought that photographs could take you to the land of fairies and angels? Or bring the joker, Bobby Darling and the Collector of Sherlock Holmes, in front of you with style? Priyanka Maria Rego, a Bangalore based, young and extremely creative fashion photographer has showcased her skills as out of the box thinking, coupled with passion and ingenuity.

Through her photographs she conveys the message that sky is her limit. She depicts the quote of William Faulkner, “The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.”

How did you get into photography?

I discovered this passion all too suddenly, almost like a calling back when I was in art school, it was my first tryst with a camera and it stuck. It became my most loved medium of expression and quickly took over my brushes and pencils. That was five years and countless shots ago. I must say I haven’t been able to put my camera down since.

Your pictures portray strong colour sense, fashion sense and out of the box thinking. What is your inspiration behind this?

Films, paintings and art. I generally get inspired by moments in time, I am very spontaneous when it comes to my work. Sometimes it’s just a look or light, lasting one second and that’s all it takes to make magic.”

How do you evaluate Indian and International photography?

As much as I would like to say that the talent and quality of a photographer should not be classified into Indian/ International photography. I would have to eat my words and say the commercial Indian Photography market is slower and narrow framed in terms of accepting individualistic and expressionistic styles. But fortunately for me and the newer generation of photographers there has been progress towards acceptance.

What are the concepts you would like to bring into your frames?

I often get lost while watching films; noticing little details like the decor, the outfits, the colors and tones, the moments, and the spaces in between moments. And I must say that it’s the details in these things that let me dream of what I can portray in my work. Ideas strike when I hear lines like “In the old days, when someone had a secret they didn’t want to share, they went up a mountain, found a tree, carved a hole in it, and whispered the secret into the hole. They then covered it with mud and leave the secret there forever.” -Wong Kar Wai’s In The Mood for Love. All these reflect on what I do and often result in a fairytale like feel.

Some photographers have the opinion that Photoshop has spoiled the real photography. What is your opinion on this?

I think photoshop is a most convinent tool for someone who wants to add more to an image than what is in reality. It lets you create what you want with the only restriction being your imagination.

Please share some tips on photography to our readers.

I don’t believe inspiration strikes suddenly. I think you need to constantly seek it out, surrounding yourself with things you find appealing. When you do that, it’s like Alice’s rabbit hole, you will find yourself in unexpected and exciting places. And nothing can stop you then. So keep your mind and eyes wide open always.

What is your advice to upcoming photographers?

I am not one for giving sensible advice, but the first thing that springs to mind is what Abbas Attar said, “Get a good pair of walking shoes and…fall in love”

Rapid Fire:

Favourite Photographer: Patrick Demarchelier

Most photogenic face: Gemma Ward

Favourite location to shoot: There are so many beautiful places on earth, it is hard to just pick one.

Your dream shoot: People underwater.
