Is sunscreen important for all seasons?

Sunscreen is definitely a must for all seasons, because even the cloudiest of days can prove harmful to the skin. The harmful rays of the sun penetrate deep into the skin, irrespective of the climate causing a fair amount of damage for the skin. In certain cases it can even lead to skin cancer. Dr. Aruna, a dermatologist says, “Skin cancer is on the rise. It affects people of all ages. An effective solution is to make proper use of sunscreen lotions at regular intervals.” Using sunscreen on regular basis can help prevent skin cancer.

Our skin needs to be protected anytime it is exposed to daylight and not just when we assume our chances of exposure to the sun is higher. Sunscreen also helps in preventing freckles and premature aging of the skin.

The SPF [sun protecting factor] of the sunscreen lotion should be a minimum of 15. Basically the SPF rating is the sum of UVB protection the sunscreen offers. If you are out for an extended period of time use SPF 30 or higher as it will absorb 90% of the sun’s rays.  It must be applied at least 30 minutes before you face the sun and then reapplied on regular intervals. Do remember, most sunscreens are not effectual until about 30 mts after application. Make it a point to apply sunscreen on all the exposed parts like the neck, shoulder, hands etc.  Especially after swimming or sweating, sunscreen should definitely be reapplied.

Facial sunscreen generally does not contain skin irritants. However, if you feel that a sunscreen product is irritating your skin, it may not be the right one for you. Check with your dermatologist and opt for sunscreen products that suit your skin. Use products that include protective moisturizers as they are less irritating to the skin. Even better is to opt for sunscreen ingredients combined with antioxidant vitamins C and vitamins G. Thus the protection against ultraviolet rays is improved offering better protection than a traditional sunscreen.

There are few people who love to tan and there are sunscreen products that allow tanning while still guarding the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. It is a great way to enjoy the pleasant effects of the sun.

Sunscreens can worsen overtime, hence check the expiry date. If you feel the product had changed color or dried up, it is advisable to buy a new one. Make-up that includes sunscreen protection can also be very useful in defending your skin from the harmful rays. Even more important is to wear wide brimmed hats and sunglasses that contain UV protection.

The amount of time you are exposed to the sun in your lifetime is one of the main factors to decide the aging of your skin. Taking simple precautions at an earlier stage would help you immensely in the long run. Remember, the appropriate application of sunscreen on regular basis is as compulsory to skin health as appropriate cleansing.
