Research shows that the writing jobs are expected to increase dramatically by 2015. With many fashion magazines cropping up there is a huge demand for fashion writers. The future for all fashion writing jobs is extremely positive. There are many different types of writing jobs within the fashion industry. A fashion journalist can work as a freelancer or as a writer employed in a publication. There are several careers one can choose from depending on their interests and style.

A fashion journalist may travel around the world or work exclusively in the office.  They generally work closely with the photographers to create attractive features to be published in the newspapers and magazines. Other tasks include holding press conferences, conducting interviews and press releases.

Educational Requirements:

 The educational and qualifying requirements of fashion journalism jobs differ according to the position. However, a majority of the jobs in the fashion writing industry require at least a bachelor’s degree in journalism or fashion design. To be a fashion journalist, one can get an internship and then pursue a career. You can get a summer internship or an after-school internship while pursuing your regular studies. You can also opt for an internship with the local newspaper or a popular magazine to gain sufficient knowledge. The experience is priceless. It can be a stepping stone to a high profile career.

What should one do?

Fashion journalists must have good writing and communication skills. You need to have good knowledge about the fashion industry which includes the fabrication, business, historical trends and latest happenings. Read the fashion magazines and watch the daily programs for the latest trends and updates. Start contributing articles for your school or college magazines and the local newspapers/magazines. Feel free to contribute as many as ideas and suggestions possible. Apart from the regular article of glitz and glamour, fashion journalism needs to focus on the conditions of the domestic market, its influence globally, export markets and other situation analysis.  Hence start thinking from all angles. You can write for blogs, online magazines, fashion websites etc. You can carve a niche for yourself by specializing in one category such as kids fashion or prêt styles. However, on the long run its best you have an idea about fashion industry on the whole.


There are numerous benefits. Fashion journalists have the opportunity to travel globally to cover the important events happening in all the fashion capitals. They have the opportunity to work with famous designers, models fashion editors and other major celebrities of the fashion fraternity.  If you are freelancing you have the option of choosing your own assignments and make your own schedule. In addition, there are numerous opportunities online for fashion writers. Above all, the salary is very attractive and encouraging.
